The Van Buren Youth Initiative (VBYI) is entering October with programs in full swing, fresh opportunities for creativity, and new partnerships to expand learning across the county. Best of all, all programs supported by VBYI are free for families-including equipment and supplies, so every student has access to participate fully.
His Place โ Hartford
Starting in October, His Place will welcome new teaching artists to deliver programming designed by Aubrey Rodgers. Mondays will feature Adventures in Ink, offering students a chance to explore illustration and creative expression through pen and ink. His Place continues to operate four days a week, providing a safe and engaging space for students to learn, create, and connect.
Families can see available classes at https://rb.gy/7y9rnk
Lucโs Light โ Paw Paw
Lucโs Light will also benefit from expanded teaching artist partnerships, adding new classes that bring together creativity and community. Programming continues three days a week with a mix
of enrichment opportunities that inspire students to explore music, art, and beyond. Families can see available classes at https://shorturl.at/6m5pI
South Haven Center for the Arts โ South Haven
At SHCA, after-school programs are running strong with four days of weekly programming, including Mondays at the Covert Library. Students are engaging in rotating mediums such as painting, sculpture, and fiber arts, alongside special opportunities like guitar club. SHCA also continues its partnership with VBYI to support the growth of arts programming countywide. Families can see available classes at https://shorturl.at/zUUsU
Building a Digital Future โ iPad Lending Library
Thanks to a grant from the South Haven Community Foundation, VBYI and SHCA are creating a lending library of 20 iPads. Local schools, libraries, and community organizations will be able
to borrow this equipment to integrate digital tools such as Procreate (digital design software) and video creation into their own programs. The lending library is on track to launch by October
2025, ensuring greater access to technology and creative opportunities across the county.
Van Buren Tech โ Countywide Access
Classes at Van Buren Tech officially launched on September 16th, and registration has been extended through September 30th to give even more students the chance to join. These programs are open to all middle and high school youth in Van Buren County, helping students build skills that support both personal growth and future careers. Families can see available classes at https://shorturl.at/c8KnP
A Countywide Effort
"With His Place, Lucโs Light, South Haven Center for the Arts, and now Van Buren Tech, VBYI is proud to provide consistent, high-quality programming four days a week in Hartford and South
Haven, and three days a week in Paw Paw. Together with community partners, we are building a vibrant network of opportunities that support Van Buren County youth in exploring their passions and preparing for the future."
Fun Fact: Research shows that students who participate in afterschool programs are more likely to improve grades, build strong social connections, and develop critical life skills, all while having fun in a safe environment.
